  • Use field intelligence tools such as trail cameras, aerial maps, and historical data (e.g., previous harvest records) to identify deer movement patterns, high-traffic areas, and seasonal behaviors.

Example: Imagine a property where deer are spotted frequently in one area but rarely elsewhere. By evaluating trail camera footage and assessing natural food sources, we can identify why deer are favoring that area. We might find that the property lacks sufficient cover or bedding areas in other sections, which limits deer activity across the land.

2. Design: Develop a Customized Plan

Once the evaluation is complete, we move into the Design phase. This is where we take the insights gathered from the evaluation and use them to create a tailored, data-driven strategy for your property. Our design aims to optimize the land for both deer habitat and hunting opportunities, ensuring that all decisions align with the specific goals of the landowner.

During this phase, some of the things we do are:

  • Create strategic food plots that provide the necessary nutrition throughout the year, ensuring deer have access to high-protein forages that help with antler growth, body mass, and overall health.
  • Enhance travel corridors by improving natural pathways deer already use, or by creating new ones that guide movement where hunters can take advantage.
  • Implement hunter management strategies that reduce pressure on key areas, ensuring a sustainable herd for future seasons.

Example: Based on the evaluation, we might design a property where food plots are placed strategically along deer travel corridors, maximizing the chances of attracting and holding deer on the property. We could recommend planting a mix of clover and brassicas in areas easily accessible to the herd during both early and late seasons.

3. Grow: Implement and Optimize

With the design finalized, we move into the Grow phase. This is the action stage, where the strategies and improvements laid out during the design are brought to life. From food plot planting to habitat enhancement, everything starts to take shape in this phase.

During this phase, some of the things we do are:

  • Plant food plots and optimize their location for maximum nutritional benefit and hunting opportunities.
  • Implement habitat improvements such as tree thinning, invasive species removal, or controlled burns to enhance the quality of the vegetation.
  • Execute hunter management plans by installing stands or blinds in key areas, and providing advice on how to hunt the property without pressuring the herd.

Example: For a property lacking sufficient cover, we might clear out an overgrown section of trees and plant native grasses to improve bedding areas. By doing so, we create a refuge where deer feel safe, encouraging them to spend more time on the property. Simultaneously, strategically placed food plots ensure deer have the nutrition they need without leaving the property.

4. Evolve: Measure and Refine

The final step in the Whitetail EDGE model is Evolve. After implementing the initial changes, it’s crucial to monitor the property and track progress over time. Deer behavior, weather patterns, and land conditions are all dynamic, which means continuous monitoring and adjustment are necessary to keep the property optimized.

During this phase, some of the things we do are:

  • Use harvest and observation data to track herd health, population numbers, and hunting success.
  • Review trail camera footage and other field data to measure the effectiveness of habitat improvements and food plots.
  • Adjust the plan seasonally, ensuring the property evolves as needed to meet changing environmental conditions and herd behaviors.

Example: Let’s say we observe through trail cameras that deer are using the food plots but avoiding specific travel corridors. We could then adjust the placement of blinds or stands, or even create new cover or corridors to guide the deer toward hunting locations.
